Cats and Dogs All at Sea – a special exhibition from the Australian Maritime Museum – showcases dozens of animal voyagers photographed aboard vessels in Sydney in the first half of the 20th century.
The SEEN@Swansea exhibition reflects prolific Sydney photographer Sam Hood’s interest in recording not only the ships that passed through Sydney Harbour, but the life of their crew and seafaring pets.
Council’s Manager Arts, Culture and Tourism Jacqui Hemsley said the photographs of cats, dogs, birds and even monkeys demonstrated the strong attachment people at sea, who were often far from their family for long periods of time, had with on-board pets.
This exhibition will give visitors a sense of the diversity of life at sea and provide a fascinating insight into Australia’s maritime history,” Ms Hemsley said.
Cats and Dogs All at Sea will be on display until 2 June 2019. Entry is by gold coin donation.
SEEN@Swansea is open daily at Swansea Library, 10am-3pm.
